It looks like 2013 is going to be a year of surprises. First, David Bowie launched a comeback and got himself straight into the top ten, now New York post-punk-dance darlings Yeah Yeah Yeahs have announced they are set to release a new album Mosquito on 15 April (UK)/16 April (US). The band have taken turns in the studio with Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio) and Nick Launay (Arcade Fire, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds), not to mention DFA’s James Murphy has worked on a track for the album as well.
The results have been described by front woman Karen O as ‘trippy’, and if the teaser video the band have put out is anything to go by (not to mention the album artwork), this seems like it could be pretty accurate. Karen O says of the new material “we took a more playful, LO-FI approach to songwriting… Much of the music was demoed in our little basement studio in Manhattan with drum machines, a shitty sample keyboard and tons of delay – which we called the soup… I think this record has more moodier and tripped-out songs than you’ve ever heard from us… You might catch some roots reggae and minimalist psychedelia influences in there.”
