After the announcement late last year that Back was planning on releasing two albums in 2013, the first new material has finally surfaced. The LA based multi-instrumentalist stated that he would be releasing one acoustic album and one more experimental studio collection over the course of the year, his first full length output since 2008’s Modern Guilt.
No solid release news just yet but the track ‘Defriended’ has just been uploaded as the first teaser for the new Beck material. It’s not clear if it will be included on either of the forthcoming albums (we’d be surprised to find it on the acoustic album), but it’s definitely a welcome return to glorious weirdness.
We’re not sure if Beck is reflecting on a bad Facebook experience, but ‘Defriended’ is a sample heavy track full of squidgy beats and typically quirky melody.
Beck has also announced that he will be performing a live rendition of Song Book, his album released solely on sheet music, alongside the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Beth Orton and Charlotte Gainsbourg on 04 July at the Barbican, London.
Listen to ‘Defriended’ below.
