Sometimes isolation can be the mother of invention. This certainly seems to be the case when it comes to producer Mkaio. Hailing from the isolated US outpost of Hawaii, the volcanic lanscapes seem to inform the expansive sounds that permeate his debut record ‘A Far Off Horizon’. The genesis of the album was a cracked cassette tape which Mkaio (AKA Matt Kammerer) found ‘deep in the mountains of Hawaii under a pile of pine needles and brush’. The various sounds were then re-worked, built upon and ended up as ‘A Far Off Horizon’.
The sonic range of the record is pretty huge, taking elements of ambient electro, drone and even disco, to say this album was eclectic would be a huge understatement. Standout track ‘Summer Heart’ pulls you in with a bracingly confident maximalist punch and sounds like a blissed-out M83 doing battle with a hyperactive Toro Y Moi.
Mkaio has already released ‘★(StarLight)’, the forthcoming single for his second album which is in the pipeline for release shortly.
