Detroit is a city that has undergone some pretty hefty changes over the past few years. But, like any story of change and rejuvenation, something worthy always rises from the ashes, and this is true of Derek Stanton. Formerly the lynchpin of detroit psychedelic rockers Awesome Color, Stanton has risen again by way of his new project Turn To Crime. Now that the dust of his previous band has settled, Stanton has risen in a completely different way, building up Turn To Crime into a fully fledged three piece and moving forward in an unexpected direction.
The towering guitar riffs that formed the back bone of Awesome Color’s output have been replaced with a chilled out, sample heavy sway. Turn To Crime’s debut album, entitled Can’t Love, is due out on 30 June, but the band have given us a little taste of what’s to come in the form of lead track ‘Sunday’s Cool’. It’s a little slice of summer that evokes the feeling of lounging by a pool in the hazy sunshine, shades on. If this track is anything to go by, Can’t Love could just be the album of the summer.
