Brooklyn based duo She Keeps Bees have been stamping their soulful rock ‘n’ roll across the globe since the release of their debut album in 2006. The combination of Jessica Larrabee’s vocals, capable of switching between sultry and soulful to outright raucous at a moment’s notice, and Andy LaPlant’s pounding, tribal drums has always been incendiary. But the band are now set to release their fourth album, entitled Eight Houses (out 26 September), and have revealed a surprisingly mellow side to themselves in the process.
Lead track ‘Is What It Is’ shows off a more mellow side to She Keeps Bees with Larrabee’s soulful vocals set against a stripped back organ and low key drum track. The song also features none other than fellow Brooklynite Sharon Van Etten, who adds a lilting, etherial harmony during the chorus, making the whole track come together like a reflective, gospel infused summer evening. She Keeps Bees may have toned down their sound, but this less-is-more approach has certainly paid off and whetted our appetites for more.
