One man minstrel of bedroom lo-fi Max Levy, who goes by the moniker King of Cats, certainly wears his heart on his sleeve. His lovelorn sound is shot through with an honesty that’s hard to find these days, but all the reflections on intimacy and unrequited love are delivered with his tongue firmly in his check, and a hefty dose of good humour.
‘Dead Lamb’ is the first track to be taken from his debut album Working Out, released on 17 November through Art Reeks (a collaborative label from joint kings of lo-fi indie Art Is Hard and Reeks of Effort ) and it’s a delightfully off-kilter gem that will get you right in the *feels*.
Teaming up with Owen Williams (Joanna Gruesome) and Adam Cave, King of Cats has created the musical equivalent of a heart scratched into a dilapidated bus shelter that’s part Aidan Moffat, part Jana Hunter and part Weezer b-side. In other words, pretty amazing.
