It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Vancouver based king of wonky folk Dan Mangan, but the news has broken that he’s back with a new album (and slightly new name). Following on from the bearded brilliance of his third album Oh Fortune released back in 2011, Dan Mangan’s new album, entitled Club Meds, is set for released on 12 January next year on the ever dependable City Slang, and we’ve got a little taste for you right here.
His new single ‘Vessel’ is a tantalising glimpse of what the new album has in store, and showcases a sound even more developed and immediate than before. Starting with loops of skeletal piano and Mangan’s soft-focus vocals, it isn’t long before the track explodes into a thumping, uplifting crescendo of horns and guitars flowing forth like a glacier suddenly bursting into an open ocean.
Club Meds sees Mangan bringing his long serving band fully into the fold, so much so that the album is being released under ‘Dan Mangan + Blacksmith’ and the fully realised collaboration brings a crystal shard edge to the music giving it a previously unexplored shine that sits somewhere between Chet Faker and Midlake. So, go ahead and whet your appetite by listening to ‘Vessel‘ below.
