Canada’s Purity Ring seemed to disappear almost as soon as they arrived after the release of their debut alum Shrines back in 2012. Their calling card of sinister and melodic electronics proved to be one of the year’s highlights but before long everyone seemed to be thinking to themselves “what happened to Purity Ring?”.
Well, it turns out they’ve been busy. The duo, consisting of vocalist Megan James and producer/beat maker Corin Roddick, hinted at a new album at the end of last year, but they have now officially announced their second album, entitled Another Eternity, which is slated for release on 3 March on 4AD. And they’ve also released a taster in the form of new track ‘Begin Again’.
The track is exactly what you’d expect from Purity Ring. It swirls with rushes of synths and compressed beats and also proves that Purity Ring haven’t lost any of their ability to create a towering hook. The progression in the music lies in the band’s embracing of a harder approach to the production as the song builds into an all encompassing techno-tinged banger. As always, this is balanced by James’ lush vocals and distinctively visceral subject matter as she imagines two people locked in a cycle of destruction and rejuvenation. But essentially Purity Ring are unmistakably the band you first fell in love with.
