You may have heard of a band called Evans The Death by now. Their new album Expect Delays is currently doing the rounds and looks set to deservedly become pretty huge. But you may not have heard about the project formulated by bassist Olly Moss. Going by the moniker Smiling Disease, Moss has been producing music under that name for about six years and it turns out he’s one prolific Mofo. Having produced the equivalent of nearly an album per year, his latest release works as a “best of”.
Beach Bodies 2008-2014 is a carefully curated collection of Moss’ material and is set for release on cassette and the usual series of ones and zeros through Memorials of Distinction. The first single to be taken from the collection is ‘Double Locked’, and it’s a splatter of blissed-out psych with a considerable bite. The track lulls you with a tower of hypnotic guitars before the whole thing unfolds to reveal its gritty vocals and steroid-pumped bass. It’s the musical equivalent of taking mescaline with The Brian Jonestown Massacre, which would probably be amazing.
