In the two years since Rebekka Karijord‘s last album, her life seems to have run an intense gamut of near-tragedy and catharsis.
Following the premature birth of her first child, the emotions at play in her music took an understandable turn towards those of anxiety and introspection. But rather than letting these events drag her down, Karijord focused her energy into writing, and the result has ended up being Mother Tongue, Karijord’s new album set for release on 27 January 2017 on Control Freak Kitten Records.
‘Waimanalo’, the first track to be taken from the record, is indicative of this reflective outlook and serves as an intimate insight into Karijord’s process for the new record. ‘Waimanalo’ flutters with a resonating piano refrain overlaid with Karijord’s distinctively direct vocals. It’s at once feather-light and packs an unimaginable amount of emotive heft.
If ‘Waimanalo’ is anything to go by, Mother Tongue is set to be an early contender in 2017.
